New Things To Try In The Area:
Here is a guide to the new Memorial, and a list of all the events!

MLK Memorial
The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is located in between the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. Dr. King will be the first African American with a memorial directly on or near the National Mall, and is only the fourth non-president in this area as well. In 1968, King's Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, proposed erecting a permanent memorial to Dr. King in Washington, DC. After years of planning, in 1999, a proposed location for the Memorial was approved. In 2000, a bronze plaque was placed in the exact location where the Memorial would be built, there was also a Ceremonial Groundbreaking in 2006. By 2009 the final project was approved and all construction began. This $120 million dollar project was created after a direct quote from Dr. King's most famous speech, "I have a dream".

The quote that the memorial was based on is: "From a mountain of despair, a stone of hope."

The Monument will include:
The address 1964 Independence Ave. (named after the Civil Rights Act of 1964)
A 30 foot statue of Dr. King named "A stone of hope"
2 large pieces of granite symbolizing "The mountain of despair"
A 450 foot wall with inscriptions of sermons and speeches of Dr. Kings
24 niches along the walk way commemorating other individuals who played a part in the Civil Rights Movement.
